Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone! What 1 Small Action Can You Take?

Are you finding yourself feeling ‘stuck, frozen, or overwhelmed’ in your life right now?

I wanted to share with you a recent life experience of mine and how a simple act helped shift so much around me😊

For those of you that don’t know, my husband is in construction and while that may sound like ‘oh great your house must be so perfect!’…the saying if you marry a shoemaker you’ll never have shoes would be a great way to describe us. My husband works all week in construction so the very last thing he wants to do is work on our home on the weekends😊 My work is primarily inside so what I really want to be doing on my free time is being outside working on the home! And you can see our pickle of a dilemma!

So, last month, when my husband took his annual solo skiing trip, what started with me replacing our TV (that had died) turned into to me demolishing 3 kitchen cabinets, a kitchen island, moving electrical outlets, finishing a kitchen window, drywalling, tiling, making new kitchen end cabinets, and then repainting our entire living room and kitchen (and keeping it a secret from my husband until he came back)! The neighborhood men that were ‘advising me’ on the work I was doing also made sure to mention to me that they didn’t want it to be known they were ‘advising me’ in the event my husband didn’t have a great reaction when he got home!

And here’s the best part of the story – the Outcome!!!!!

  • I had no idea what I was doing but I knew the trusted people I could call to ask for advice and teach me what I needed to learn
  • Each day I had to solve a new problem and learn a new skill
  • I became more and more empowered by the things I was doing (that I had never done before) and I believed more and more in my abilities
  • When I spoke to my husband every night on the phone, he heard how happy I was and how much fun I was having doing ‘all the projects I wanted to do’ (still he didn’t know what they were) and so it made him happy
  • The final product turned out to be really beautiful (now I’m ready to take on an even bigger project!)
  • My husband came home and was overjoyed by what I had created, that he didn’t have to do any of the work, and that there was one more thing off the home project list😉

I decided to share this little story with you because prior to this both of us had been stuck as it related to our home improvement, him feeling burdened with seeing work all around him and me feeling frozen to do anything on my own as it related to the home…after all he is the expert!

Even though your future may feel a little uncertain and you may have to learn new things, you might just surprise yourself when you take that 1 little step forward. You never know, you may even find something new and great about yourself!
